Next Gen Design Innovation: Lab and Research Facilities of the Future

There is an increasing acknowledgement of the link between carbon reduction, healthy buildings, and the positive impact of each on building occupants. Promega Corporation’s Kornberg Center, completed in 2021 in Madison, Wisconsin wielded a global lens and next-generation, cross-disciplinary collaboration to create what ultimately has become one of the most sustainable and resilient laboratory research buildings in the world. Join Illinois Green Alliance for a panel discussion with the project team to explore the architectural and engineering perspective of this unique design. During this session panelists will: Explore how the Kornberg Center design process identified architectural, mechanical, structural, and construction synergies; Describe how stacking multiple strategies combines for the greatest impact; Examine how a laboratory building can achieve a 65% reduction in energy use relative to comparable facilities despite its location in a cold northern climate; Describe sustainability features such as a full perimeter dual skin façade, natural ventilation, geothermal heating and cooling, and active thermal slabs were woven into the building’s design
